After Sherlock Holmes: Where to See Edward Hardwicke

Edward Hardwicke

Edward Hardwicke took over Dr Watson from David Burke in Granada's Sherlock Holmes in 1986. He held the role for eight years opposite Jeremy Brett, making a difficult handover look effortless.

His other crime appearances form a tour around Baker Street. The Sweeney cast him as a mysterious government official; The Chinese Detective gave him a senior detective.

Lovejoy took him on a Scottish treasure hunt, while a Ruth Rendell story offered seaside retirement. Poirot made him Sir Henry Angkatell, host to a perfectly arranged murder.

He supplies the calm when everything else is about to go wrong.

The Sweeney · S04E11

Hearts and Minds

First broadcast 1978-11-23 · Edward Hardwicke as Justin Bellcourt

A burglar dead at a professor's home, nothing stolen, and the explanation stranger than the crime: experimental heart pills for a friendly foreign head of state, a mastermind called Danilov, and a scientist who goes on the run entrusting his entire supply to Regan and Carter. Hardwicke is Justin Bellcourt, the government official delivering the impossible brief in the show's most unlikely espionage hour.

The Chinese Detective · S02E04

Tapdancer

First broadcast 1982-10-01 · Edward Hardwicke as Det. Chief Insp. Lowell

The episode the series is best remembered by: a mother's plea sends Ho looking for a missing boy whose tap shoes and cassette player make him the most memorable case subject of the entire run. Hardwicke is Detective Chief Inspector Lowell, a senior officer from outside Ho's station, in the hour with the highest rating in the database. The Chinese Detective episode pages are not yet on the site.

Lovejoy · S03E07

Scotch on the Rocks

First broadcast 1992-02-23 · Edward Hardwicke as Kinloch

A claymore found in an attic turns out to be a map to buried French gold, and a man called Kinloch offers far more than the blade is worth, claiming a family connection. Hardwicke plays him as the suspicious offer Lovejoy refuses — right before the sword becomes the subject of a bungled burglary and a controversial scheme called Tartan Transactions enters the picture.

The Ruth Rendell Mysteries · S10E07

Front Seat

First broadcast 1997-02-21 · Edward Hardwicke as Hugh Branksome

Hugh and Cecily Branksome retire to the seaside town where they grew up, the reward for a working life — except the town holds their childhoods, and neither is prepared for what else it holds. Hardwicke is Hugh, the husband who objected to the move and lost, as Cecily's old boyfriend resurfaces boorish as ever and the unresolved business arrives in human form early on.

Agatha Christie's Poirot · S09E04

The Hollow

First broadcast 2004-04-26 · Edward Hardwicke as Sir Henry Angkatell

Poirot stumbles on the body before the mystery has begun: Dr John Christow dying at the pool, his wife standing nearby with a revolver — a perfect tableau, which is exactly why he distrusts it. Hardwicke is Sir Henry Angkatell, presiding over the house party full of people who knew the philandering doctor rather too well, in Christie's study of a scene too tidy to be true.
