Children’s Privacy Notice
1. Introduction
This notice explains how A Cup of Crime approaches the privacy of children, and in particular children under 13, in line with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and its implementing rules.
In one sentence: the Site is not aimed at children, does nothing to attract them, and does not knowingly collect, use or disclose personal information from anyone under 13.
2. The Site is not directed at children
A Cup of Crime reviews and ranks British crime drama — television written for adults, much of it from the 1970s and 1980s, much of it containing violence, strong language and adult themes. Nothing about the Site’s content, design, language or imagery is intended to appeal primarily to children under 13, and the Site does not design, market or operate itself to draw children in.
Because of what it covers, COPPA’s central requirements — the ones that bite when a site is directed at children or knowingly collects their information — do not apply to the Site as it stands.
3. What the Site collects, and from whom
The Site holds only the limited information described in the Privacy Policy: a salted hash of a visitor’s IP address recorded when they cast a rating or verdict, and local storage that stays on the visitor’s own device. None of this involves registration, contact details, or the kind of information a child might be prompted to hand over — there are no forms, chat areas, games, contests or child-oriented activities on the Site.
The Site does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and it does not engage in behavioural advertising targeted at children.
4. If the Site learns a child under 13 has submitted information
Because the Site has no sign-up and no contact forms, there is no realistic route for a child to hand over personal information — the only “input” is a star rating. But if the Site ever did learn that a child under 13 had provided personal information, it would delete that information as soon as reasonably practicable and review its practices to prevent it happening again.
5. What a parent should do
If you are a parent or guardian and you believe your child has provided personal information to the Site, or you have any question about children’s privacy here, contact David O’Connell using the details at the bottom of this page. He will respond to verifiable requests, and will delete any qualifying child data he is asked to remove.
6. Third-party services
The Site loads its display fonts from Google Fonts and links out to third-party websites. It does not control how those third parties collect or use information. If a child were to follow a link from the Site to a streaming service or broadcaster, that service’s own privacy policy would apply, and parents are encouraged to review the policies of any service their children use.
