1. Acceptance of these terms
Welcome to A Cup of Crime. By accessing or using this website, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree with any part of them, please do not use the Site.
The Site is a small, independent publication of reviews, rankings and profiles of British crime drama, run by one person. The sections below set out the ground rules for reading it and taking part in its ratings.
2. What the Site offers
A Cup of Crime publishes editorial content — reviews, verdicts, rankings and actor profiles — about British crime drama, largely from the 1970s to today. It also lets visitors leave star ratings and “fair / unfair” verdicts on individual reviews, and offers a Top 5 tool that runs on your own device.
The Site does not sell products or services, does not host user accounts, and does not charge for access. The opinions in its reviews belong to the site and are offered for information and entertainment.
3. Accounts and registration
The Site does not currently offer user accounts, and you do not need to register to read anything or to vote on a review. If the Site ever introduces accounts or comments, these Terms will be updated to cover them, and that update will be flagged here.
4. Intellectual property
4.1 What the Site owns
Everything the Site publishes — the text of its reviews and profiles, its rankings, its page layouts, the “look and feel” of the design, and the site’s name and logo — is owned by the site unless clearly credited otherwise, and is protected by copyright and other intellectual-property laws. Show titles, stills and names of actors and programmes remain the property of their respective owners, and the Site’s use of them is limited to commentary, criticism and review.
4.2 What you may do
You may read the Site, share short excerpts or quotes with a link back to the page, and link to any page of the Site. That is the point of the footer’s “fair-use review & commentary” line.
4.3 What you may not do
You may not reproduce, scrape, or republish the Site’s content wholesale, sell it, pass it off as your own, or use it to build a competing product — including feeding large amounts of it into a language model or other automated tool — without written permission. You may not copy the Site’s design or branding.
5. Ratings and votes
When you rate a review or call a verdict fair or unfair, you are taking part in the Site’s reader tallies. A vote is counted once per entity per device, tied to a salted hash of your IP address to stop it being gamed (see the Privacy Policy). You are welcome to vote as you genuinely feel; the Site asks only that you not try to inflate or distort results with scripts or repeated manipulation.
6. Third-party content and links
Reviews and profiles link out to third-party websites — broadcasters, streaming services, retailers and reference sites — and may mention and show small images of the programmes under review. The Site does not control those third-party websites and is not responsible for their content or practices. Their own terms and privacy policies apply once you leave the Site.
7. Disclaimers
7.1 Editorial content is opinion
The views in the Site’s reviews and rankings are opinions, strongly held but opinions all the same, formed by one person watching a great deal of British television. They are offered for information and entertainment, and are not professional, legal, financial, medical or any other kind of advice. Do not make decisions on the strength of a review; use it to decide what to watch, and nothing more serious than that.
7.2 “As is” and “as available”
The Site is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Site disclaims all warranties, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, reliability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement.
The Site does not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or free of harmful components, or that its content will always meet your expectations. You access and use the Site at your own risk.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Site and its operator shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages — including loss of profits, data, goodwill or other intangible losses — arising out of or in connection with your use of, or inability to use, the Site, any content on it, or any decision you make based on it.
Because the Site is provided free of charge, in no event shall the Site’s total liability to you for all claims exceed one hundred dollars ($100.00).
9. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Site and its operator from and against any claims, liabilities, damages and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your breach of these Terms or your misuse of the Site.
10. Governing law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of the Site will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New York, and you consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.
11. Severability and waiver
If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in full force and effect. The Site’s failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of its right to do so later.
12. Changes to these terms
These Terms may be updated from time to time to reflect how the Site works. Changes take effect when posted, with a new “last updated” date at the top. Material changes will be flagged. Your continued use of the Site after a change means you accept the revised Terms.
