Dead Male One

Two mysteries, one weekend. Frost's Saturday is wrecked by the discovery of a body in the river — a man carrying a driving licence that belongs to someone else, Colin Drysdale — and then, on the pitch at Denton's football ground, the club's star player collapses at a post-match press conference. Adie Carr, arrogant and obnoxious off the pitch, is in a coma, and the tests reveal why: a massive dose of a designer performance-enhancing drug called mesanbuterol has caused severe brain damage.

The football case is a web of money and spite. Carr conned an elderly man out of £30,000 with his teammates Gower and Todd, promising unnecessary building work on his home. He turned down a £250,000 move to another club, gambling on a bigger offer. That decision ruined the club's heavily indebted owner, Mike Ross, who drugged Carr's drink intending only to embarrass him — the dose was too high, and the star is left comatose, possibly forever. Ross confesses, and Frost's sardonic verdict lands like a punch: if Carr lingers in his coma beyond twelve months, Ross cannot be tried for murder.

The river body unravels more slowly. The dead man had been hospitalised with a burst appendix and simply disappeared; his licence had been lifted by a prostitute, and the real Drysdale — a man who found his wife boring — was visiting her. The case goes unsolved, and that is the point. Frost, alone and unsure anyone would miss him, feels an affinity for the nameless dead. The episode ends with him putting his old marital home on the market, preparing to share a home with Shirley Fisher.

Dead Male One, written by Christopher Russell and directed by Roger Bamford, is a study in what the show does best: a lurid public crime solved with satisfaction, and a quiet private one left open like a wound. The identity of the river man — later resolved in the series' sixth season as the Appendix Man — lingers precisely because Frost cannot close it.

The unresolved thread is the point: not every case closes, and some mysteries become companions. Frost's bond with the nameless dead man says more about him than any confession could.
