Paying the Price

Frost burns his own house down. Frying food, distracted, he sets the kitchen alight and stands on the pavement watching the only home he has left go up in flames — and there is something almost freeing in it. He had been unable to leave the house since his wife's death; now the decision has been made for him. It is the grimmest possible framing for the case that follows.

Pauline Venables is snatched after being lured to an isolated farm on the pretence of collecting a puppy meant as a birthday gift for her sister Sue. The ransom note, delivered by a man in a blue motorcycle helmet, demands £30,000 from a group calling itself the Taskforce; Frost and WPC Claire Toms chase suspects in circles — Pauline's boyfriend Karl, a former inmate; even Sue herself, whose husband was unfaithful with Pauline — before the trail settles on Linda Brook, a naive young cleaner at Bellamy's department store.

The tapes give it away. When Sue demands proof of life, the recording from Pauline carries the sound of a farm in the background, and Frost's attention pivots to Linda's controlling boyfriend, Graham McArdy. There is no Taskforce; there is only McArdy, played by Marc Warren with a silky menace that curdles into violence. He has moved Pauline from place to place, and when Linda — consumed by guilt — removes Pauline's blindfold and apologises, McArdy kills her in a rage. The final ransom demand is £50,000; Sue pays it; McArdy takes the money and runs, but documents at Linda's home give him away. Frost, enraged by the body count, tracks him down and takes him into custody as McArdy breaks down and pleads for mercy.

Paying the Price, written by Christopher Russell and directed by Ross Devenish, is a cold, efficient thriller that makes a virtue of its villain's competence — McArdy is genuinely clever, and the episode lets him stay ahead of Frost until the very end. Marc Warren's performance, all charm and dead eyes, is the engine. But the episode's lasting image is its opening: a detective standing outside his own burning house, learning, in the ruins of his home life, that he has nothing left to protect but his job.

The episode's coldness is deliberate: a clever killer, a procedural race, and a hero with nothing left to lose. Marc Warren's McArdy remains one of the series' great guest villains. A cold, efficient thriller with a genuinely menacing villain.
