Where I Want to Be

Annie Conlon's job is on the line, and that changes the temperature of every scene she's in. Katherine Devlin plays the whole hour with that particular alertness of someone who can't afford a mistake, while Lee keeps consolidating power in the background, moving pieces the way only he knows how. The title, whatever it refers to, hangs over Annie like a question she's afraid to answer. She's fighting for a place in a service that keeps changing the rules of who gets to stay. The episode keeps that thread visible even while the response call takes over.

Then the episode does its central trick: it throws Stevie and Grace back together on a response call. They're professionals with history, and none of that matters once the call goes wrong. The consequences are terrible, and the show earns the word by letting the fallout arrive in the small hours rather than in one big scene. It's the kind of episode that trusts you to notice the moment a bad shift becomes a bad week, and then to wonder what comes after. There's no time to process anything; the job keeps coming.

Lawn and Patterson wrote it, Jack Casey directed, and it aired in May 2024. The usual company is out, Siân Brooke's Grace and Martin McCann's Stevie among them, with Andrea Irvine, Joanne Crawford and Frank Blake steady in support. But the heart of it is two people who can't quite work together anymore being forced to anyway, with Annie's career hanging in the balance above them all. Grace and Stevie's history does the heavy lifting, and the actors know exactly how much to show.

Where I Want to Be sounds like a statement of belonging. It plays more like a question nobody in the station wants to answer out loud. For Annie, at least, the answer is the job itself, if she can keep it.
