The third series opens with the Blackthorn team pulled out of their usual territory and into a world of clean houses and careful smiles. A drug overdose is the reason, and the episode wastes no time showing how thin the polish is on Belfast's seemingly innocent elite. The address book is full of people who look fine and aren't. After two series spent mostly on the estates, the change of scenery is bracing, and the show clearly enjoys the new furniture. The contrast with the estates is the point, and the episode makes it without labouring it.

Grace is the one who has to walk into it. A face from her past turns up. But the encounter sends her back through her own failings at the worst possible moment, mid-investigation, mid-everything, and Siân Brooke does that uncomfortable thing she does so well: you can see Grace filing her own history away in real time while the case moves on without her. The episode lets her sit with it, which is braver than giving her a speech about it. The encounter is the hour's quiet engine, and everything else runs off it.

Lawn and Patterson wrote it, Jack Casey directed, and it opened the third series in September 2025. The returning company, Katherine Devlin's Annie, Nathan Braniff's Tommy and Martin McCann's Stevie among them, handles the procedural half of the hour while Grace wrestles the personal one. The investigation itself is a good one, the kind that peels layers off a community the officers don't usually get invited into, and the episode never lets the luxury settings do the work for it. The overdose case has real edges to it, and the show keeps them sharp.

It's a confident opening, one that trusts the audience to sit with a woman doing her job while her past taps her on the shoulder. The overdose is the trigger. The hangover is the episode.
