Episode 2

Catherine arrives home with a passenger: Ilinka Blazevic, an emaciated Croatian woman rescued after four years of being trafficked and enslaved. Ivana Basic plays her with a stillness that stops the show cold. The Cawood house was already crowded with complications, and now there is a stranger in it, carrying four years of damage. The episode never uses Ilinka as a prop. It just puts her in the middle of a family that knows something about damage and lets the room do the work.

John Wadsworth's nerves are going the other way. Vicky's threat has him panicking, and the panic spills out into his home life, where Kevin Doyle's John is starting to look like a man who will do something stupid to make it stop. His wife Amanda and their children are in the house while he unravels, and Julie Hesmondhalgh's Amanda watches him with the wary eyes of someone who has seen the signs before. Catherine comes face to face with Tommy, and the confrontation lands with all the history you'd expect.

The rescue is not the story. The horror is in what Ilinka carries, and the episode keeps her in the frame long enough for that to land. John's panic has nowhere to go either. Vicky is a threat he can't report and can't reason with, so he starts moving pieces around his own life, and every move makes the mess bigger.

Sally Wainwright wrote and directed this one. Sarah Lancashire anchors it as Catherine, with Siobhan Finneran's Clare, Karl Davies's Daniel, Angela Pleasence's Winnie, and the Wadsworth household filled out by Julie Hesmondhalgh as Amanda, Felix Johnson as Jack, James Senneck as Ben and Madison Brown as Amber.

The episode keeps the two stories in separate rooms and lets them build separately. Ilinka's stillness in Catherine's house, John's panic in his own. Neither feels like the whole story yet, and that's the point. Wainwright is laying the season's tracks without being obvious about it.
