A Private Place

An elderly couple refuse to comply with an eviction order, and the police are the ones left holding the warrant. A Private Place is a study in stubbornness, the physical act of removal set against a lifetime of domestic life that nobody wants to be the one to end.

Inspector Jean Darblay handles the case with more tact than the paperwork allows. Annie and Billy Stamp, played by Gwen Nelson and Arthur Hewlett, are not trespassers in any meaningful sense; they are people whose attachment to their home is absolute, and the law is asking them to leave it behind. Darblay works the situation alongside Sergeant Joseph Beck and Sergeant George Parrish, and the resistance draws in the wider circle of the household and the street: the Pendle siblings, Charlie and Sophie, plus Knowles, Rose and Nathan, each with their own stake in the standoff. Nobody wants to be the one to carry the furniture out.

The episode finds its drama in the small details of the battle: the patience required, the dignity preserved, the moment when the law and humanity have to look at each other across a front room. It is not a whodunit, and the show does not pretend it is. The mystery is whether anybody can find a way through without breaking the old couple in the process.

Some of the best crime drama is domestic, and this is that: intractable humanity, a warrant, and a woman trying to square the two. It is a quiet hour, and a good one.
