Aunt Sally

The store detective at the centre of Aunt Sally has spent her working life watching other people, and now the watching is over. Compulsorily retired, Gwen Fletcher finds her world tilting, and the episode follows the slow fall of a woman whose entire sense of purpose came through the shop's security mirrors.

Margery Mason plays Gwen with the quiet dignity of somebody who has just been told her usefulness is at an end. Her life begins to come apart not in dramatic fashion but in the small ways that hurt most: the routines gone, the authority gone, the day stretching out with nothing in it. The police station provides the episode's other pole. Inspector Jean Darblay and her officers, Sergeant Joseph Beck, Sergeant George Parrish, PC David Gallagher and PC Ted Williams, move through their own working day, and the contrast between their world and Gwen's empty one gives the hour its shape. Mr. Rutherford, Mrs. Collins and Mr. Gilbert complete the picture of the life she is being edged out of.

John Foster wrote it, Les Chatfield directed. Stephanie Turner is Jean Darblay, with David Hargreaves as Tom, David Ellison as Beck, Noel Collins as Parrish, Gerard Kelly as Gallagher and Alan Bennion as PC Ted Williams. Margery Mason is Gwen Fletcher, Tim Wylton is Mr. Rutherford, Peggy Sinclair is Mrs. Collins and Harry Markham is Mr. Gilbert.

The episode is less about crime than about identity, about what happens to people when the thing they were good at is taken away. It captures the particular cruelty of being judged surplus, and it does not flinch from showing how quickly competence can be made to feel worthless.

It is a sad hour, and a true one. The deeper drama in police television was often not the mystery at all, but the everyday struggle to stay somebody.

Aunt Sally understands that, and it lets Gwen keep her dignity right to the end.
