Whispers
First aired 1981-11-07 · Written by Tony Parker · Directed by Leonard Lewis
An informant's whisper sends a man to jail, and the consequences land on Inspector Jean Darblay's doorstep. Whispers is about the oldest trade secret in policing: the tip that solves the case also creates the next one, and the debt does not always get paid by the person who owes it.
The man jailed on the informant's information is not the last word on the matter. The fallout spreads outward and settles in the Darblay household, forcing Jean to confront how deeply her work and her private life are tangled together. The episode lets the consequences breathe, showing the strain in the marriage as the professional and the personal refuse to stay in their separate boxes. Around the couple, the station keeps turning: Sergeant Joseph Beck, Sergeant George Parrish and PC David Gallagher carry the routine work, and the community figures of Alison Cowan, Sheila and Colin Thomas, Barbara Gates and Geoff Todd give the case its human geography.
Tony Parker wrote it, Leonard Lewis directed. Stephanie Turner is Jean Darblay, with David Hargreaves as Tom, David Ellison as Beck, Noel Collins as Parrish and Gerard Kelly as Gallagher. Elizabeth Power plays Alison Cowan, Illona Linthwaite is Sheila Thomas, Jeremy Nicholas is Colin Thomas, Julie Eastham is Barbara Gates and Malcolm Hebden is Geoff Todd.
The episode's strength is in what it does not show. No raid, no courtroom drama, just the quiet price of a job where a word in the right ear can ruin a life, including sometimes the life of the person who passed the word on. The show understands that the lines between duty and personal consequence blur faster than any procedure manual admits.
It is the kind of hour that grounds the series in lived experience. Justice, here, has a forwarding address, and it is the Darblay front room.
