Cause For Complaint
First aired 1982-11-07 · Written by Tony Charles · Directed by Christopher Barry
PC Martin Helmshore faces a serious accusation, and the episode turns its lens inward. Cause For Complaint is not about an external villain. It is about the machinery of the force turning on one of its own, and the particular coldness of a corridor where everybody used to say good morning.
Helmshore, played by David Straun, has been a steady presence in the ranks for a while now, and the accusation against him drops him into a different kind of police work entirely: clearing his name. Inspector Jean Darblay has to balance her duty to the inquiry with her knowledge of the man, and Sergeant Joseph Beck and Sergeant George Parrish watch the proceedings with the wariness of officers who have seen colleagues go through this before. Detective Superintendent Nuttall, played by Peter Jeffrey, one of the great reliable faces of British television, brings the weight of the internal investigation, with Detective Inspector Jim Yates, Bill Enstone, Vincent Berry and Frank Andrews orbiting the complaint. Even a Motorbike Salesman gets drawn into the picture.
Tony Charles wrote it, Christopher Barry directed. Stephanie Turner is Jean Darblay, with David Ellison as Beck, Noel Collins as Parrish and David Straun as Helmshore. Peter Jeffrey is Detective Superintendent Nuttall, Ian Liston is Detective Inspector Jim Yates, Mike Savage is Bill Enstone, Joe Figg is Vincent Berry, Allan McClelland is Frank Andrews and Peter Martin is the Motorbike Salesman.
The tension here is not physical. It is the slow poison of suspicion, the reputational damage that starts the moment the allegation is logged, and the episode keeps the atmosphere taut without ever reaching for melodrama. The question of the accusation's weight is held open for the full hour, and the viewer is left guessing along with everyone in the building.
It is a contained piece of drama, and a sharp one. A professional life can be derailed by an allegation in the time it takes to fill out a form.
