Guilt

DS Bernie Duckworth's daughter is knocked down by a lorry, and the whole station feels the shockwave. Guilt is not a procedural caper. It is a character study in breakdown, built on the raw aftermath of a family tragedy and the way grief has no place on the duty roster.

Duckworth, played by Lloyd McGuire, is a steady, unglamorous presence in the CID, and the episode watches that steadiness crack under the weight of what has happened to his child. Inspector Kate Longton and the rest of the squad carry the work around him, Sergeant Joseph Beck and Sergeant George Parrish managing the station, PC Danny Sparks and PC Brian Kelleher holding the beat, while the investigation into the accident touches Peter and Pat Walsh, a man called Mike and a girl named Heather. The mechanics of what happened matter, but the episode's real subject is the emotional wreckage in the middle of it all.

William Humble wrote it, Sarah Hellings directed. Anna Carteret is Kate Longton, with David Ellison as Beck, Noel Collins as Parrish, Mark Botham as Sparks, C.J. The show has always understood that the personal bleeds into the professional, and here it lets the bleeding show. Duckworth's grief is not tidied away for the sake of the episode's structure; it sits in every scene he is in, and the station's awkward attempts to be normal around him are painfully true.

It is a sharp reminder that life's biggest calamities do not respect the routines of police work. They find a way in, and the best anyone can do is hold the line until the grief passes.
