Flowers Tomorrow
First aired 1984-12-01 · Written by Wally K. Daly · Directed by Jan Sargeant
Flowers Tomorrow starts the worst way a day can. A man walks into the new vicar's study, confesses to murder, and then announces he means to kill himself. Hartley's newest clergyman gets a baptism of fire, and Inspector Kate Longton gets a crisis instead of a routine shift. There is no build-up, no slow burn; the door opens and the trouble is already inside.
The confession spreads through the town quickly. The Jackson household is drawn in, with George Irving's Alan Jackson and Rachel Bell's Mrs. Jackson, and Bill Wallis's Reverend Peter Davies stuck at the centre of someone else's dark secret. Malcolm Terris's foreman and a young child played by Lily Morgan round out the community caught in the fallout, and the child's presence is the detail that hurts, the reminder of what is at stake. Nobody in the town has a script for a day like this, least of all the man who was hired to preach. Longton works with Sergeant Joseph Beck and Sergeant George Parrish, with PC Brian Kelleher and PC Danny Sparks managing the scene.
Wally K. Daly wrote it, Jan Sargeant directed. Anna Carteret is Kate Longton, with David Ellison as Beck, Noel Collins as Parrish, C.J. Allen as Kelleher and Mark Botham as Sparks. George Irving plays Alan Jackson, Rachel Bell is Mrs. Jackson, Bill Wallis is Reverend Peter Davies, Malcolm Terris is the foreman and Lily Morgan is the child.
The episode has the shape of a siege without the walls. One confession is all it takes to set a town shuddering. And the vicar, barely unpacked, has to sit with the weight of what he has heard while the police work out how to keep a man alive who has decided to die. The episode keeps the tension tight without ever leaving the town's streets. It is the kind of hour that reminds you how much drama lives in a single doorbell. A quiet hour with a very loud centre.
