I'll Never Forget Whats'ername

The Winchester's quiz team has one asset, and Arthur has gone out and found him: Marty 'Brains' Goldblum, a man whose general knowledge is encyclopaedic and whose record is considerably less distinguished. The night is the big quiz against the old rivals, and Arthur is determined to win it. But Marty, it emerges, is an escaped prisoner, and D.S. Morley has been keeping half an eye on the pub all evening with that in mind.

Bragging rights being what they are in this corner of London, Arthur is prepared to run the risk. The problem solves itself, sort of. Marty suffers a turn and, with the guilt and the pressure of the evening closing in, gives himself up to the authorities. Arthur is left facing the quiz with his star player in a police cell, which turns the night into a matter of family honour.

The salvage job falls to an unlikely pairing: Ray and Detective Constable Field, who between them know enough quiz answers and enough about keeping a straight face to get the Daley team through. Morley hovers nearby, aware that a fugitive is somewhere in the building, and the whole evening keeps threatening to collapse into farce.

William Ivory and Leon Griffiths wrote it, Lawrence Gordon Clark directed. George Cole is Arthur, Gary Webster is Ray and Glynn Edwards is Dave, with Nicholas Day as Morley, Jonty Stephens as Field, Allan Corduner as Marty, Kenneth Cranham as Walter, Sidney Livingstone as Bert, Lill Roughley as Doreen and David Howey as the Quiz Master.

A pub quiz is small stakes for a show that usually deals in stolen goods and ruined deals. That is rather the point. The episode treats the night like a heist, and the team that wins it is the one nobody would have bet on.
