Surprise

Rachel has talked Nick into buying her a flat, and then discovers she is carrying his child. She decides against a termination, and that choice hangs over the whole hour, even when the hour is busy elsewhere.

The case that week is a grim one. Susan Metcalfe, a mother of two, was raped and left to bleed to death in the boot of her own car. The scene is handled without flinching, the way this show always handles the worst of it. A sharp piece of detective work from Rachel points at teenager Luke Farrell, and he is charged. But the arrest does not settle anything. The fallout brings another death and another charge, and the clean win Rachel thought she had secured starts to look very fragile. None of it goes where the team expected.

Janet is elsewhere, dreading her wedding anniversary party and pressing on with the cold case of Veronica, her school friend murdered when they were children. She meets the retired officer who ran the original investigation, and he passes over his files along with a troubling theory: Veronica may have been one victim of a serial killer who is still at large. The anniversary party is what she is really dreading; the files are almost a relief. Janet takes the files home with her. That tells you everything about where her head is.

Sally Wainwright, Diane Taylor and Suranne Jones wrote it, Sarah Pia Anderson directed. Suranne Jones's Rachel and Lesley Sharp's Janet carry the weight, with Rupert Graves as Nick, Amelia Bullmore's Gill Murray, Nicholas Gleaves's Andy Roper, Steve Cooper as Graham Metcalfe, Tony Mooney as Pete Readyough and the usual squad in support.

Rachel's pregnancy and Janet's anniversary, on top of a dead woman in a car boot. It is a lot of weight for one hour, and the hour wears it well. And two of those three stories are only just beginning.
