Janet comes face to face with Geoff Hastings, the serial killer who left her fighting for her life a few months earlier. Hastings has information about further victims, and he will only give it to her. The interview is his stage, and he uses it to pick at her private life, which is how Gill and Rachel end up learning about the fling with Andy Roper. Andy refuses to accept that it is over, and Janet is left threatening to report him to the DCI. The man who tried to kill her has managed to make her life smaller from a cell.

The squad's case is the racially motivated murder of Yusuf, a young taxi driver. The investigation runs cold until Rachel follows a hunch, and the hunch leads to the killer and to something better: Hastings' diaries, where his confessions are kept. The diaries are the whole case in one bundle, and they land in the squad room like a bomb. It is a quiet triumph for Rachel, who cannot even get her own wedding under control, since Sean is busy organising the day without her consent.

Two men are running Janet's and Rachel's lives from very different positions of power. And both women are working to take the wheel back. One of them is a monster; the other is a colleague. The episode is not sure which is worse. The balance of power shifts in the final scene, and neither woman is quite ready for it.
