Wrong Place, Wrong Time

Janet walks in on Rachel having sex with Kevin Lumb and throws her out. The row is enormous, and the frost the next morning is thick enough that the two women can barely work the same room, which is awkward because they have a murder to solve.

The dead man is Kenneth Valentine, an elderly gent reported missing by his son Philip. Philip had a drunken argument with his father about moving his girlfriend into the old man's flat, which would be a classic motive. The robbery squad cuts across it: a young man named Deepak Nadar was arrested for a theft on the very street where Kenneth's body was found. Nadar and his accomplice are charged, and the case closes about as fast as these things ever do. Two arrests and a closed file, with barely any drama to spare for the victim.

The real action is elsewhere. Rachel confesses everything to Sean, and Sean punches Kevin in public, a scene this show earns by building the tension for a season. The operation over, Gill tells the team who the informer was: someone leaking information to the press for money, and the reveal lands with the dull weight of a betrayal rather than a twist.

Rachel refuses to go away with Kevin, and moves in with her sister instead. Whatever she is running towards, it is not a holiday with the man Janet caught her with.

Sally Wainwright, Diane Taylor and Amelia Bullmore wrote it, Morag Fullarton directed. Lesley Sharp and Suranne Jones are the engine, with Ben Batt's Kevin, Sean Maguire's Sean, Amelia Bullmore's Gill, Paul Ryan Carberry's Phillip Valentine and Judith Barker's Dorothy around them, plus David Prosho and Delroy Brown.

The murder is solved almost in passing. The episode is really about the wreckage Rachel has been stacking up, and the moment it finally topples. It never quite declares a winner in the row, which feels right.
