Professional Divide
First aired 2014-10-15 · Written by Emily Ballou, Diane Taylor, Sally Wainwright · Directed by Noreen Kershaw
Two people are shot at close range in their own pub in the early hours: Tam Robbinson and her sister-in-law Patricia. Simon Robinson, Tam's son, was staying with a friend, and he is left feeling utterly alone, having believed his sister Carla died when he was three. The identification of the bodies brings a stranger truth: Carla did not die. She was disowned by the family after failed attempts at rehabilitation, and she is very much alive.
The investigation links Carla to Ben Townsley, a known criminal she met in rehab. Carla calls him a mere acquaintance, but her drug dealer Mark Britton gives the police evidence that incriminates them both. And the case slowly turns from a double murder into a family history with teeth.
Rachel, meanwhile, is troubled by what Gill said about her relationship with Will and gets cold feet about the awards ceremony she was meant to attend with him. Will eventually splits with her, and the breakup lands in the middle of the case like weather. Janet has her own domestic worry: Elise's heart is being broken by Eleanor Goodhead's son, and Janet's maternal instinct is to rescue her daughter and bring her home. Both women are also quietly worried about Gill, who is drinking heavily.
Emily Ballou, Diane Taylor and Sally Wainwright wrote it, Noreen Kershaw directed. Amelia Bullmore's Gill, Suranne Jones's Rachel and Lesley Sharp's Janet lead, with Joe Wandera's Simon, Christina Tam's Maya, Mina Anwar's Eleanor and the usual squad of David Prosho, Tony Mooney, Danny Webb and Delroy Brown in support.
A family that wrote one of its children out of its history, and the police trying to write her back in for a murder inquiry. The title is about the divide between what the job asks and what the people doing it can take.
