Episode 3

A famous novelist survives an assassination attempt, and Danny and the team take the case. The novelist is well-known enough that the attempt makes the news before the team has its first meeting. The attempt itself was loud, public, and almost theatrical. The obvious reading, a celebrated writer targeted for his words, doesn't hold for long. The closer they look, the clearer it becomes that the novelist was never the real target. The attack was a distraction, and the real plot is hiding somewhere behind it. The writer was bait, and the real game was always somewhere else. The team has to decide whether the writer was ever meant to die at all.

The hunt takes them across London, through the parts of the city where such a plan would be assembled. Anupam Kher's Harakat and Simon De Selva's Zuli are the faces of the threat. Paul Bhattacharjee's Muhammed Khordad and Jamie Martin's Tube Engineer show the reach of the operation, touching the city's infrastructure at the points nobody watches. Tim McInnerny's Oliver Mace hovers in the background, because even a conspiracy needs a committee to answer to. Richard Harrington's Will North, Keeley Hawes's Zoe, Shauna Macdonald's Sam Buxton and Rory MacGregor's Colin Wells do the legwork. The episode works by peeling back the public story to reveal the colder machinery underneath. The assassination attempt was theatre, and the team has to work out who was really in the audience. It's the kind of hour where the more you learn, the less certain you feel. Spooks rarely lets you watch the machinery for this long, and the patience pays off. The episode trusts its audience to keep up, and that trust is repaid. And the ending lands with the quiet click of a trap closing.
