Gingerbread

Simon Barrow is young, and he has just watched the murder of his father tear his life open. But his father's dying words, left on Simon's answering machine, do not point anywhere useful. They send the police off on a trail of confusion instead, and the boy is left carrying a message that keeps everyone guessing. The message was meant for the son, and that makes the misdirection personal in a way the team cannot shake. Grief makes a poor witness, and the case knows it better than anyone.

The episode stays close to Simon, and that is the right call. Simon's nightmare journey is the through-line, and the police are always one step behind it. Around the edges move the faces of the case: Jean Taggart, Dr Stephen Andrews, Betty Duncan, and a community trying to make sense of a death that makes no sense. The recorded message is the hinge everything swings on, and the script is careful with it. One overheard sentence, and the whole investigation goes sideways.

The Barrow family story gives the mystery a centre of gravity that a pure procedural would lack.

It is a quiet, grief-soaked episode, and it knows that a single recorded message can be worth more than any witness. The best thing about it is the restraint. Tiny clues do the damage here, and the feelings stay huge. There is no chase and no gun battle to hide behind; the answer is sitting in the message all along.
