A Cup of Crime

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy · S01E04

How It All Fits Together

First aired 1979-10-01 · Written by John le Carré, Arthur Hopcraft · Directed by John Irvin

The suspicion has settled over the Circus like weather, and Smiley keeps digging. The trail keeps leading back to one name: Karla, the Soviet master spy who, everyone now agrees, is running the agent inside MI6. The episode keeps circling the memory of Smiley's one meeting with him, the man Tarr knew as the Sandman. It is a memory that has followed him for years, and he is only now reading it properly.

Ricki Tarr is coming apart, and his instability forces Smiley to look inward. Guillam, loyal and exposed after the archive job, feels the pressure too. Smiley goes back over his own history with the Circus, and into his personal life, particularly anything that touches Control. The past turns out to be the one file he never finished reading. The threads of disloyalty pull at everything, from personal failings to bureaucratic oversight.

John le Carré and Arthur Hopcraft wrote it, John Irvin directed it, and it went out on 1 October 1979. Alec Guinness anchors the episode as Smiley, with Michael Jayston as Peter Guillam, Hywel Bennett as Ricki Tarr, Bernard Hepton as Toby Esterhase, Ian Richardson as Bill Haydon, Terence Rigby as Roy Bland, Michael Aldridge as Percy Alleline, Warren Clarke as Alwyn and George Sewell as Mendel. Patrick Stewart is Karla, and the part is every bit as chilling as it should be. Much of the hour is Smiley remembering, which gives it a haunted quality.

It is a study in quiet attrition, built on mistrust and submerged memory. The pressure never lets up, and the episode is honest about the exhaustion it takes to keep a national security facade standing. Guinness does his best work in the silences, and Bennett gives Tarr a rattled, desperate edge. By the end, the mystery matters less than the cost. And Karla's shadow falls across every scene, even the ones he isn't in.
