A Sudden Silence

First aired 1991-01-30 · Written by Nicolas Freeling, Keith Dewhurst · Directed by Herbert Wise

"A Sudden Silence" opens on a man already dead in a side street. He was a government minister, or so the papers will later say, but the body carries no honest name. Every document on him is false, and the question Piet is handed is blunt: who was this man running from, and why was he so determined to vanish that he buried his own identity?

The answer, when it comes, is wrapped in political shame. The minister was about to flee the country, and his death turns a private panic into a public scandal that reaches higher than Piet would like. Piet works through the layers of false papers and half-told stories, and the pleasure here is in the untangling rather than any single reveal. The case is built from small deceptions, and the episode lets each one unfold at its own pace.

Barry Foster is Van der Valk, with Meg Davies as Arlette and Richard Huw as Wim. Ronald Hines is Samson. The minister's circle is played by Kenneth Cranham as Dirk Boutsen, Ciaran Madden as Melanie Van Hoorn, Nicholas Le Prevost as Van Hoorn, Gary Olsen as Brouwer, Andrew Ray as Stevin, and Andrew Wilde as Luther. Nicolas Freeling and Keith Dewhurst wrote it; Herbert Wise directed.

I appreciate how the story keeps its cards close. The false-ID hook could tip into farce in lesser hands, but the writing stays dry and matter-of-fact, which suits a man found dead with a wallet full of lies. It is a tidy, faintly melancholy piece of work, more interested in why a powerful man chose to run than in the mechanics of his death. The silence of the title is the right note: nobody involved is in a hurry to tell the truth, and the longer Piet digs, the more comfortable they seem with the quiet.
