Widows: Episode 6

First aired 1983-04-20 · Written by Lynda La Plante · Directed by Ian Toynton

Rio is where the money is, and Linda and Bella are already there, which leaves Dolly and Shirley with the hard part: getting out of the country with Eddie Rawlins and half of London watching. The plan Dolly builds is pure theatre. Shirley's mother is summoned to the house, given a wig and a coat, and sent off in Dolly's car, so that Eddie follows the wrong woman. Dolly and Shirley take Shirley's brother's car to the airport, and Shirley, worried her luggage will look too heavy, hands the money case to a helpful stranger.

Back at the house, the trap closes on the wrong people. Harry, Eddie and another man turn up. Harry and Eddie go inside; the other man deals with D.I. Resnick, watching from his car, and leaves him for dead. Harry finds his clothes ripped up and the ledgers burnt, and you can feel his world shrinking. The police arrive in time to take Eddie and the other man, but Harry is gone again.

The money nearly doesn't make it. On the plane Dolly learns that customs will search everyone's bags, so the whole escape has to be reworked mid-air. But at Rio she goes through first with the case swapped for something else, and that is the last we see of the heist for a while.

Ann Mitchell, Maureen O'Farrell, Fiona Hendley and Eva Mottley are all back, with Maurice O'Connell's Harry, Stanley Meadows's Eddie, David Calder's Resnick, Paul Jesson as Fuller, Kate Williams as Audrey Withey and Terence Harvey as Chief Insp. Saunders. Lynda La Plante wrote it, Ian Toynton directed.

Series one ends with the women scattered and the men still fighting over the wreckage. Dolly has the money, a new country and a plan that just about held together. That is a better outcome than most of the men got, and the look on Harry's face when he finds his wardrobe in shreds is worth the price of the episode alone.
