She's Out: Episode 2
First aired 1995-03-13 · Written by Lynda La Plante · Directed by Ian Toynton
Dolly's offer is practical: she will split her share of the diamond money with the women, but they work for it, helping her renovate the house. The arrangement keeps everyone close, which is probably the point. The women agree to the split, which is the only sensible response when the alternative is a share of nothing. She applies for permission to turn the Grange Health Farm into a children's home, and the application digs up the place's history, which turns out to include a spell as a brothel under Ester's management. Nobody said the property was respectable.
Meanwhile she arranges to meet the fence, Jimmy Donaldson, unaware that the police are listening in. Ester and Angela go off to collect the diamonds, and it is only then that Dolly discovers Donaldson should be in prison. They race to his house and escape the police, but the escape ends with Donaldson under the car. Dolly takes the diamonds off him on the spot.
The payoff comes as Ester packs to leave. Dolly walks in and lays out the stones, supposedly worth six million pounds. Ester's plans for a quiet exit evaporate on the spot. Six million pounds changes a person's timetable.
Lynda La Plante wrote it, Ian Toynton directed. The cast is the same company as the opener: Ann Mitchell's Dolly, Linda Marlowe's Ester, Maureen Sweeney's Gloria, Anna Patrick's Julia, Zoe Heyes's Connie, Indra Ové's Angela, Maggie McCarthy's Kathleen and Kate Williams's Audrey, with Adrian Rawlins's DS Mike Withey and Hugh Quarshie's DCI Ron Craigh on the other side of the law.
The money keeps everyone circling one another, and the secrets keep the circle small. Dolly is playing the longest game of anyone in the room, and she is not done yet. The fence is gone and the stones are back in her hands. The police are still trying to work out which way the car went.
