Episode 2

The threat level goes up almost before the first episode's dust settles. Julia Montague is holding quiet meetings with Stephen Hunter-Dunn, the Director General of the security service. The police are getting the message that they are no longer in the room, and neither is her own minister of state. Hunter-Dunn brings intelligence that Budd's children's school is the next target, payback for the train. He advises telling almost no one: the leak, he fears, is inside the police.

They stop the attack, but the bomb is on a timer. Two terrorists and three police officers die. Montague's response is to hand the whole investigation to MI5, a move that goes down as well as you would expect. The Budd family is moved to a safe house; Budd himself is pulled off her detail, then quietly reinstated when she decides she wants him back, complete with a place at a special needs school for his son Charlie.

But the bigger trouble comes on the road back from COBRA. Sniper fire kills Montague's driver. Budd gives chase and corners the shooter, who turns out to be Andy Apsted, his old army friend. He shoots himself before anyone can ask him anything. Budd tells no one they knew each other. That evening he and Montague act on the attraction that has been simmering, and it takes about twelve hours for the counter-terrorism command to ask him to start recording her meetings. Anne Sampson and Lorraine Craddock are polite about it. They also mention that Montague knew about the school plot in advance, which lands differently now.

Jed Mercurio and Thomas Vincent again, and the cast thickens: Richard Madden's Budd and Keeley Hawes's Montague stay front and centre, with Stuart Bowman's Hunter-Dunn, Gina McKee's Sampson, Tom Brooke back as Apsted, and Bella Padden and Matthew Stagg as the Budd children.

It is the episode where the show stops being about a threat and starts being about who is holding the information. Budd is being used, and he can feel it.
