The episode earns its reveal by making Wexford work for it. Every interview with the Nightingale circle, every detail of the will from the previous part, feeds into the moment where the family's careful story stops holding. Quentin, Denys and Georgina Villiers, Katje Doorn, Sean Lovell, Lionel Marriott, Mrs Myrtle Cantrip: the same faces keep returning, and this time the questions are sharper. The truth, when it comes, is the kind Rendell specialised in, less about who held the weapon than about who held the grudge.

George Baker and Christopher Ravenscroft anchor the final push, with Michael Jayston's Quentin Nightingale carrying the weight of the family's secrets and Catherine Neilson's Elizabeth at the centre of it all without saying a word. Nigel Terry's Denys and Karen Meagher's Georgina fill out the family portrait, and the script keeps all of them in the frame until the reveal. Ruth Rendell wrote it, and Mary McMurray directed, and the whole thing lands with the quiet satisfaction of a case properly closed. The hour went out in July 1988, bringing the story to an end after two parts of patient misdirection.

The ending is tidy in the way these stories rarely are, which is a small mercy after two parts of suspicion. Wexford closes the file, and the viewer is left with the aftertaste the best of these mysteries always leave: the sense that the solution was sitting in plain sight, and that the family's trouble was never really about the murder at all.
