Family Ties

PC Ted Palmer decides to challenge Inspector Jean Darblay's authority, and the consequences are unhappy for everyone involved. Family Ties is a disciplinary story in the truest sense: the station's rules and the personal impulse to assert oneself collide, and the wreckage takes a while to clear. It aired in October 1982, in the third of Stephanie Turner's three series as Darblay, before Anna Carteret's Kate Longton took charge of Hartley from the fourth series on, and it shows the original lead at the height of her authority.

Palmer, played by Pip Donaghy, is not some cartoon rebel. He is a constable with a grievance and a sense of his own importance, and his challenge to the inspector's authority forces the whole station to take sides. Darblay handles it the way she handles everything, with composure, but the episode is honest that composure has a price. Sergeant Joseph Beck and Sergeant George Parrish watch the proceedings from the ranks, PC Martin Helmshore keeps his head down, and Inspector Harry Buxton brings the official weight. Beyond the station, Bob Ramsdon, Sandra and Tony Clegg and Patricia Palmer make up the world the trouble comes home to.

Simon Masters wrote it, David Maloney directed. Stephanie Turner is Jean Darblay, with David Ellison as Beck, Noel Collins as Parrish, David Straun as PC Martin Helmshore, Edward Kelsey as Inspector Harry Buxton and Pip Donaghy as PC Ted Palmer. Bernard Kay plays Bob Ramsdon, Victoria Burton is Sandra Clegg, John Bowler is Tony Clegg and Hazel Clyne is Patricia Palmer.

The episode's interest is in the institutional rules and the people who must find their way through them. Challenging authority in a police force is never just a personal matter; it ripples through the shift pattern, the canteen and the careers of everybody nearby, and the show lets those ripples spread.

The most potent fuel in this genre was never the mystery itself. It is the people trying to solve it and the rules they must live inside, and Family Ties runs on exactly that.
