Nothing To Report

A rowdy night at the Warmsleigh Road Social Club leaves the police with the kind of mess that does not show up in the crime stats: noise complaints, bruised egos, spilled beer and a whole neighbourhood not going to sleep until somebody sorts it out. Nothing To Report is about the aftermath, the part of policing that happens after the fun has stopped.

The episode follows the officers through the debris of the evening. Inspector Jean Darblay takes charge as the situation unwinds, with Sergeant Joseph Beck and Sergeant George Parrish beside her, PC Martin Helmshore wading into the crowd, and Tom Darblay drawn into the edges of the club's orbit. The people of the night make up a proper cast: Chris Oldham, Les, Frank, Mrs. Fairchild, and Mrs. Parrish, whose presence hints at the sergeant's own connection to the evening's events. The sheer volume of people involved is the point; after closing time, everybody has an opinion and nobody has a clear memory.

Henry Livings wrote it, Robert Tronson directed. Stephanie Turner is Jean Darblay, with David Ellison as Beck, Noel Collins as Parrish, David Hargreaves as Tom and David Straun as PC Martin Helmshore. David Daker plays Chris Oldham, John Junkin is Les, Harold Goodwin is Frank, Jean Boht is Mrs. Fairchild and Rosalind Bailey is Mrs. Parrish. Livings had been in front of the camera himself the previous series, playing Hooker Wainwright in Gorgeous, and his ear for people talking over each other shows throughout. The episode went out on 16 October 1982, partway through the third series.

The show gets real mileage out of the confined setting. One social club, one long night, and a cast of characters whose stories keep doubling back on each other, and the hour feels both sprawling and tightly contained at once. It is a snapshot of local authority policing after dark, done with affection and a sharp eye.

The title is the joke. There is always something to report; the trick is deciding which of it matters.
