Talika Desai was an overachieving student and an amateur taxidermist, which is the kind of combination that makes the police take a second look at everything. Her death looks like a drug overdose, and the initial findings point towards accident. Lewis and Hathaway are not satisfied, and the more they learn about her routines, her habits and the people around her, the less the neat explanation holds.

The investigation treats the overdose as a starting point rather than an ending. The people who knew Talika each offer a version of her: the driven student, the odd hobbyist, the girl with connections that complicated her life. Academic pressure and personal entanglements surface in every interview, and the detectives find themselves sifting through details that suggest the first conclusion was far too tidy. Something about the scene, and about her, does not match.

But the amateur taxidermy is the kind of detail that makes a mystery feel real, a hobby that tells you more about a person than her grades do. The episode lets the strangeness breathe instead of explaining it away, and the investigation profits from the patience.

Colin Dexter and Helen Jenkins wrote it, and Nicholas Laughland directed. Shanaya Rafaat plays Talika Desai, Helen Schlesinger is Vivienne Tedman, Tim Pigott-Smith plays Jasper Hammond, Andreea Paduraru takes Jenny March, Ralf Little plays Sean Wilkinson, Nicholas Jones is Philip Hathaway, Clare Holman plays Dr Hobson and Angela Griffin takes DS Lizzie Maddox. Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox lead the investigation. Tim Pigott-Smith and the rest of the guest cast give the case its weight, every interview adding a new colour to Talika's portrait.

The episode opens the final season with a quieter kind of mystery, one built out of character detail rather than grand theatrics. The strangeness of the victim, the taxidermy, the overachieving, gives the case its texture, and the show trusts that texture to carry the interest. The answer, when it comes, will need to explain more than a needle and a body.
