Episode 5

Lindsay Denton is fighting for her life, and the details of a vicious conspiracy involving corrupt officers are beginning to surface. The evidence linking Deputy Chief Constable Mike Dryden to the ambush keeps growing, which puts Superintendent Ted Hastings in an impossible position: he is under pressure to arrest his own senior officer. The episode runs on that pressure, and it is considerable. The conspiracy is no longer a rumour; it is a shape forming on the whiteboard.

Every character is caught in the same machinery. Jeremy Cole and Manish Prasad work the case with Arnott and Fleming, while Cottan and Hargreaves hover at the edges and Kasia adds her own complications. The focus narrows on Dryden, and the closer the evidence gets, the more the choices hurt. Hastings has to decide whether duty means protecting the force or exposing it, and the episode makes him earn that decision. Nobody in the room wants to be there, and everybody has to stay. There is no comfortable option, and the show doesn't offer one.

Jed Mercurio wrote it, Daniel Nettheim directed. Adrian Dunbar gives Hastings the weight of a man carrying the whole institution on his back, and Keeley Hawes makes Denton's survival feel like the only thing that matters. Henry Pettigrew's Cole, Sacha Dhawan's Prasad, Martin Compston's Arnott, Vicky McClure's Fleming, Craig Parkinson's Cottan, Julia Krynke's Kasia, Mark Bonnar's Dryden and Tony Pitts's Hargreaves round out the cast. It is a cast the show has built carefully, and the payoff shows.

The episode is about how fragile institutional integrity looks when somebody inside decides to attack it. The conspiracy is bad enough. But the fact that it is coming from within makes it worse. Hastings's dilemma is the kind that does not resolve cleanly, and the show does not pretend otherwise. It is a grim week for the force, and the show treats it with the seriousness it deserves. The bill is still being counted.
