A Cup of Crime

Line of Duty · S05E02

Episode 2

First aired 2019-04-07 · Written by Jed Mercurio · Directed by John Strickland

Kate and Steve attempt to track down a lead, and the week is not kind to them. A fresh police leak enables another audacious raid, which means the leak is still active and still dangerous. Steve's attempts to gather information put him in an increasingly dangerous situation, and the episode makes sure the danger feels real. The lead is the kind that looks promising from a distance and turns sour up close. The episode tracks the pursuit step by step, and every step costs someone something.

The episode is about information and what it costs. Every piece of intelligence has a price, and the people paying it are usually the ones at the bottom. The raid is a reminder that the OCG has friends inside the force, and every success the team has is shadowed by the knowledge that someone is feeding the other side. The show has always understood that police work is mostly about who knows what first. The leak is the ghost in the machine, and the machine is starting to hear it.

Jed Mercurio wrote it, John Strickland directed. Martin Compston's Arnott takes the risks this week, with Vicky McClure's Fleming watching his back and Adrian Dunbar's Hastings managing the politics above them. Maya Sondhi's Bindra, Aiysha Hart's Railston, Alastair Natkiel's Banks, Gregory Piper's Pilkington, Ace Bhatti's Sindwhani, Elizabeth Rider's Wise and Polly Walker's Biggaloe complete the ensemble. The cast is one of the show's most reliable, and the episode uses it without waste.

The episode is a reminder that in this world, information is a weapon and leaks are the ammunition. The team is chasing a lead that keeps moving. But the leak keeps moving faster, and the danger is not theoretical. Steve's position gets worse with every scene, and the show does not pretend he will be fine. It is tense, well-made television, and it does not let the audience relax. The next raid will come, and the only question is who will be in the way.
