Mr Mukerjee runs the newsagent's Arthur uses, and when the shop becomes the target of death threats and a brick through the window, Arthur sends Terry along to act as minder. Shop minding sounds like light work, which is exactly what it never turns out to be. It looks like local trouble at first, the kind of grudge that simmers around a small shop. But the truth turns out to be considerably more personal.

Mukerjee, it emerges, has promised his daughter in marriage, and not just once. The threats trace back to a group of men who believe they've been promised the same young woman. And the revenge is aimed squarely at the shopkeeper who overcommitted his daughter's future. A single daughter, promised several times over, is the kind of arithmetic that ends in broken glass. Terry is left to unpick a vendetta with family honour at its heart, protecting a man whose problems are largely of his own making.

Saeed Jaffrey makes Mukerjee a charming disaster, all apologies and no solutions, and he's well supported by Shireen Anwar's Indira, Ahmed Khalil's Aslam, Stanley Lebor's Wilson, Graham Stark's car owner, Roy Evans's elderly man, Edwin Brown's Harry and Christopher Scoular's young diner. Dennis Waterman and George Cole play the familiar double act around them, Terry doing the actual work while Arthur works out how to be paid for it twice. It's a two-hander with a full supporting cast, and the jokes land because the danger stays real underneath them.

It's a neat little parable about promises, the kind Arthur Daley understands better than most. The difference is that Mukerjee only promised one daughter to several men. Arthur has been doing the equivalent with Terry for years, and getting away with it every time.
