Senior Citizen Caine

Cecil Caine has buried his wife and, in the way of wealthy men, immediately started worrying about the taxman. He owns a garage, he's retiring, and he wants money moved out of the business before the VAT man gets his hands on it. For Cecil, retirement looks less like a rest and more like an escape plan. To that end he hires Terry as a bodyguard, a man to watch his back while the funds take a scenic route. It's the kind of job Terry accepts with reservations and Arthur immediately starts pricing up.

The problem is the children. Cecil has left the business to his family rather than a chosen successor, and the family is a clutch of grown children who are all out for themselves. They are the kind of heirs who check the will twice. Johnny, Sonia and Christine each have a hand out and a plan for the proceeds. Lionel Jeffries plays Cecil with a fine, weary dignity, a man who spent a lifetime building what his children are now dividing. Terry's principles sit awkwardly beside Arthur's keen interest in acquiring a cheap Rolls Royce from the estate.

Andrew Payne and Leon Griffiths wrote the script, Robert Young directed. Keith Barron plays Johnny Caine, Susan Fleetwood is Sonia and Fiona Curzon plays Christine. Angela Richards appears as Sheila Jones, John Carlin as Derek and James Cosmo as Jock McLeish, with Glynn Edwards as Dave. Dennis Waterman and George Cole lead the piece.

But the episode trades street crime for something closer to home, and the change suits it. Greed inside a family is a more recognisable villain than most of the professionals Arthur deals with, and watching Terry try to do the honest thing within a dishonest family is quietly satisfying. The Rolls Royce subplot alone is worth the price of admission, and Cecil's quiet dignity is the reason the whole thing works.
