For a Few Dollars More

Marooned is the word. The one-way tickets have stranded the Daleys in Sydney with no money for the hotel and none for the flight home, so they move into a backpackers' hostel where the comfort is relative and the hygiene dubious. Ray takes bar work to keep the till going. Arthur, being Arthur, finds a more colourful line: Derek Collins, a small-time street dealer and receiver of stolen goods, is practically an Antipodean mirror of him, and the two get on at once. Collins works the pavements the way Arthur works the lockup, and business is brisk until the law takes an interest.

The police eventually catch up with Arthur's street trading. Detective Sergeant Davis gives him forty-eight hours to leave Australia, which is generous, and then Reid, the businessman from the inheritance affair, decides Arthur must be a major drug smuggler and cuts it to twenty-four. Having two men, each convinced he is a different kind of crook, want him out of the country is a compliment of sorts. By the time the hours run out, the Daleys have scraped together enough for stand-by seats, and they head home to England.

Bernard Dempsey, Kevin McNally and Leon Griffiths wrote the script and Roger Bamford directed. George Cole and Gary Webster carry it; Terry Gill is Collins, Danielle Spencer plays Robyn, Roy Billing is Davis and Mark Strickson plays Swan. Bill Hunter returns as Reid, with George Leppard as the manager, Boris Brkic as Ross and Robert Alexander's concierge on the edges.

Three episodes in Australia end with Arthur leaving it the way he arrived: broke, technically, but with a story. The trilogy has sent him chasing a fortune, losing a fortune and being mistaken for a drug baron, and the whole thing closes with the Daleys back where they started. That is Arthur's usual exchange rate.
