The second part finds Miss Marple and Dolly settled in at the Majestic, where the money belongs to Conway Jefferson, a millionaire with a family and an entourage orbiting him. Ruby Keene's death has to matter to someone in that circle, and the hotel is full of people with secrets they are not sharing. The premises are glamorous. The company is not. The characters gathered around the old man are steeped in secrets, and every casual afternoon walk feels charged with unspoken suspicion. The Jefferson household is a small court in exile, with the old man as its king and everyone else calculating their position. Dolly Bantry is the ideal companion for this kind of work: she is welcome everywhere and remembers everything.

And Miss Marple's hunch about a second killing proves all too justified. The next body lands, and the hotel stops feeling like a holiday. Her intuition has never been content with one corpse, and her sense that this is not an isolated event sharpens with every polite conversation. Every word Dolly and Jane overhear now carries a price, and the Jefferson circle closes ranks around the old man and his version of events. It is the middle chapter's job to raise the stakes without giving the game away, and this one does it by letting the suspicion spread.

Agatha Christie's original novel is the source, with no director credited in the records. Joan Hickson carries the middle chapter as Miss Marple, with Dolly Bantry beside her, two women asking polite questions while a family comes apart.

Middle parts of a serial are usually just bridges. This one earns its keep by making the next corpse feel inevitable, which turns out to be a talent in itself. The hotel has stopped being a resort and become a trap, and the best guest in it is the one who came to watch. By the time the credits roll, the holiday is over in every sense, and the case is only halfway home.
