Fisher, on a cost-cutting drive, has brought in the Happy Ploughman food chain to take over the police canteen franchise, replacing the catering the force previously used. Crabbe hates it on taste as much as on principle, and the canteen food becomes a running grievance. The Happy Ploughman's operations are then deliberately vandalised. Arrests go down, and Fisher turns to Crabbe to find a reason to get rid of the company he brought in, which means Fisher asking his best detective to justify a decision Fisher himself has already made.
The obvious suspect is Flora McKee, a local baker who was not merely rejected as a supplier to the firm but was subjected to improper advances by its manager, Geoff Reece. She has both a commercial grievance and a personal one, and the episode spends about two-thirds of its length letting the audience weigh them. Crabbe identifies the culprit and, in doing so, solves an old mystery into the bargain, so the resolution ties the vandalism to something older rather than treating the old matter as background. Neither the culprit nor the old mystery is named in any source consulted, and this article does not supply them. The method of the vandalism is likewise not described in the sources.
Margaret is also on a cost-cutting campaign, and she has been hired by the Happy Ploughman to be their accountant. That is the episode's central collision: Fisher is buying the company's food, Margaret is auditing its books and Crabbe is investigating its vandalism. The three Crabbe-adjacent relationships to the same firm are the episode's construction, and it takes its time making them add up. Mr E Reviews noted that for about two-thirds of the episode it is not clear how the various plot threads are related, though they are sewn up by the end, and that structural complaint is fair. Putting Margaret inside the case rather than beside it is the episode's real advance: she is paid by the company her husband is investigating, which is a conflict the series does not otherwise deploy.
Steven Pacey plays Geoff Reece, the manager whose improper advances to Flora are the reason she lost the contract, and the harassment is treated as ordinary corporate behaviour rather than as a crime, which is the more uncomfortable choice. Susannah Doyle's Flora has to hold both sides of the episode's question, wronged woman or vandal, and the part is written so she could credibly be either. Fisher's role is its most interesting piece of characterisation: he is not investigating anything, he wants a result that validates a decision he has already taken on cost grounds, and the episode shows the displacement of policing into institutional convenience without stating it.
This is the series' most directly institutional episode of the run. The crime is vandalism against a catering contract, the motive is a mix of commercial and personal grievance, and every character in authority is pursuing a cost or reputation interest of their own. The comedy is at its driest, since the joke is a detective applying his palate to an institutional food contract, and the prevailing tone is exasperation rather than detection. The title is the food idiom used as a pun, breaking bread being both the shared meal and the breaking of the arrangement with the Happy Ploughman, and the episode is one of the run's few stories about institutional catering, which is the closest the series comes to writing about the food industry rather than about cooking.
