Episode 8
First aired 2007-12-04 · Written by Neil Cross, David Wolstencroft · Directed by Stefan Schwartz
Bob Hogan finds out that Ros Myers is a traitor, and from there everything moves very fast. Her relationship with Yalta is out in the open, her position is untenable, and she turns herself in. Then she talks Harry Pearce into the one option that keeps her alive and useful: sending her back out into the field as a double agent. It is not a heroic turn; it is arithmetic.
While that plays out, Harry is brought before Yalta's chief, and the identity of the man across the table shocks him to the core. The episode runs the two threads side by side, personal betrayal on one hand and a reckoning Harry never expected on the other. Her confession is a performance too, and that is the unsettling part; you stop being sure which Ros is the real one. But it is the quiet scenes that land hardest.
Neil Cross and David Wolstencroft wrote it, Stefan Schwartz directed. Hermione Norris carries the hour as Ros Myers, with Peter Firth's Harry Pearce, Rupert Penry-Jones's Adam Carter, Gemma Jones's Connie James, Miranda Raison's Jo Portman, Hugh Simon's Malcolm Wynn-Jones, Matthew Marsh's Bob Hogan, Alex Lanipekun's Ben Kaplan, Claire Cox's Magritte and James Laurenson's Sholto around her. It is a crowded hour, and every one of those faces has a reason to be looking at Ros sideways now.
The episode is a hinge. Everything Ros has built comes apart in an hour, and she walks back into the field knowing that the people she works with are watching her for the first time. Norris makes the calculation visible: the flicker of choice behind every line. The double life was always the point of her. Now the double life is all there is.
Harry, meanwhile, is left holding a secret that is going to change how he deals with the world from now on. You can see him decide what to do with it. The episode ends there, which is the right place to end.
