The End of the Line

The tabloids have Cade in their sights, and his future is suddenly not his own. A man who has spent his career judging others finds himself judged in public, daily, without appeal.

The episode keeps its focus narrow, on Cade and the machine around him while the spotlight burns. Sustained negative coverage does its work slowly, and the script is patient about showing the damage: colleagues who start hedging, allies who start drifting. A reputation is worth a little less with every edition, and every edition chips away at something. The story is a reminder that a police force is held together by trust as much as by rules, and trust is harder to repair than a broken procedure.

The series has always understood that a chief constable's real battles are often fought in offices and headlines, and this episode makes that explicit.
