Shame

A badly beaten boy is brought in and refuses to name his attackers. For DI Maggie Forbes and DS Jimmy Fenton, that silence is the case. Enquiries quickly edge past ordinary child cruelty into something more alarming, and the whole investigation turns on the boy: who he is protecting, and why. Every question the squad asks comes back against that wall of quiet.

The episode keeps its nerve, letting the mystery build at the pace of quiet interviews and door-to-door work rather than shouting. Around the boy gather the Reynoldses, the Kings, a woman called Charlie and a Doctor Winner, and each holds a piece of the picture. Fenton does the legwork, Russell watches from the top, and Maggie holds it all together with the patience the job demands. The steady rhythm is the point: nobody confesses in a hurry, and the truth surfaces only when people stop performing for the detectives. The show keeps the boy's injuries as a fact rather than a spectacle, which is the right call.

Jill Gascoine leads as Maggie Forbes, with William Marlowe as DCI Russell, Derek Thompson as Fenton, Rosemary Martin as Jo Reynolds, Michael Melia as Dennis Tilley, Lee Whitlock as Peter Reynolds, Tenniel Evans and Doreen Mantle as the Kings, Joan Ann Maynard as Charlie and Angus MacKay as Doctor Winner.

But the title says it all, really. This is an episode about shame: the boy's, and the shame of the adults who let things get this far. It's not flashy television, and it doesn't need to be. Some cases are solved with a sharp word and a rattle of keys; this one is solved with patience, and it feels all the more real for that. The boy's silence stays with you longer than any confession could.
