The second part of the story opens in the mess left by the first. Chappel is now personally tangled in Nikki's situation. Her pimp, David Hinkley, beats her, and although she still will not give a statement, Chappel keeps trying to protect her. Hinkley passes for a respectable family man by daylight and does not like the attention. But when his own daughter Natasha is snatched by a rival pimp, Guy Walsh, it is Chappel he comes to.

Walsh is the man who killed the prostitute at the centre of the case, after catching her poaching girls for Hinkley. He turns up at Hinkley's house, finds it empty, and takes Natasha instead. Hinkley pays him a generous sum to get her back, and the negotiation goes badly. Nikki, out of hospital by now, ends up at Walsh's place and finds his prisoner.

The squad track Hinkley down, and he tells them what Walsh is capable of. Chappel walks into the flat playing a punter, and Nikki points him to where Natasha is held. She is freed and Walsh is arrested.

All of this runs alongside Chappel's affair with his own psychiatrist, Christina Weir, which the episode treats as one more way the job has leaked into his private life. Barry Simner wrote it and Douglas Mackinnon directed, with Ken Stott's Chappel supported by Anna Chancellor as Christina, Caroline Catz as Cheryl Hutchins, David Harewood as Joe Robinson and Philip Wright as Walsh.

It is a busier hour than the first, and not always a tidier one. The show keeps blurring where police duty ends and Chappel's own judgement begins, and that murk is the point. The dead girl who started the whole thing is still unavenged, and her killing sits under every scene. Struan Rodger's Hinkley stays a cold piece of work to the last, and the two-parter closes with Walsh behind bars but the squad looking no cleaner for it.
