The Return of the Invincible Man

Arthur's tailor, Solly Salmon, is in trouble. His staff are striking over pay, the business is going under, and the solution he lands on is an insurance job: he wants Arthur to get a gang together, rob the safe, and claim the wages were stolen. Arthur, naturally, is delighted to help arrange it.

But the man for the job is Scotch Harry, an invincible man in name only. Harry attempts the safe-cracking and fails so spectacularly that he ends up in hospital swathed in bandages. Arthur and Terry spring him before Chisholm can get a proper look at him, and then face the question of where to hide a half-wrapped criminal. Harry's ex-wife, Margaret Stuart, offers a sanctuary that turns out to be anything but. The plan was never going to survive contact with a real safe, and it doesn't.

John Bluthal plays Solly with the worried air of a man watching his life's work disappear, and Phil McCall gives Scotch Harry a cheerful unconcern that survives even the bandages. Anne Kristen is Margaret, and Michael Sarne and David Shawyer turn up as Billy and Benny Beesley, who add their own complications to a plan that was already collapsing. Everyone involved behaves as if the insurance money is already spent. The striking staff are the only sensible people in the story, and nobody listens to them.

Leon Griffiths wrote it alone, and Roy Ward Baker directed. Dennis Waterman is Terry, George Cole is Arthur, Glynn Edwards is Dave, and Patrick Malahide is Chisholm, with Michael Povey as D.C. Jones.

The title is the joke. A safe-cracker called the Invincible Man gets blown up on the job, then needs rescuing from his own wife. Insurance fraud needs a burglary that looks like one. What they stage is closer to a demolition.
