The Price · S01E04
Episode 4
First aired 1985-01-31 · Written by Peter Barkworth, Peter Ransley · Directed by Peter Smith
Inside the kidnappers' group, things are coming apart. Kate's paranoia is rising, and the tensions between the captors start to threaten everything they have built on forced cooperation. The strain was already visible last week, and here it starts to eat through the seams. It is a useful reminder that the people holding Frances are not a disciplined unit; they are frightened people with guns, which may be worse.
On the other side, Geoffrey is contemplating his options, and his thoughts turn to Frances's sister. The family connection gives him access to details about his wife that he did not ask for, and what he learns is more unsettling than he wanted. Geoffrey is learning things he cannot unlearn, and the episode lets that knowledge sit sour. The episode braids the two storylines together: trust breaking down among the captors, and a husband discovering that he never really knew the woman he is trying to save. Every interaction feels loaded, either with suspicion or with information that was better left alone.
Peter Barkworth plays Geoffrey Carr, with Harriet Walter as Frances Carr and Susanna Reid as Clare. Aingeal Grehan is Kate, Adrian Dunbar is Willy and Derek Thompson is Frank Crossan. Colm Hefferon appears as Garda Twomey, Ann Sinnott as Mother, Linda Spurrier as Margaret and David Lyon as Simon. Peter Barkworth and Peter Ransley wrote it, and Peter Smith directed.
But the episode's quiet achievement is the double portrait. Geoffrey's growing knowledge of his wife changes the rescue mission into something more complicated, and Kate's paranoia does the same for the kidnappers' side. Both groups are coming apart in their own ways, and the question of who cracks first keeps the hour moving. The two storylines never meet, which is exactly right: they are pulling toward the same collision from opposite ends.
