Annie Keel has served half her sentence for killing her husband and a neighbour's son. The whole case against her rested on one thing: her own confession. No forensics worth the name, just a woman telling the court she'd done it. Twenty-five years on, new evidence has started to suggest she might be innocent, and Boyd and the team reopen the file.

The question that drives the hour isn't who did it, exactly. It's why Annie said she did. People confess falsely for reasons that make terrible sense: to protect someone, to end an interrogation, because they've been persuaded they're guilty. The episode is honest about how flimsy that foundation was at the time and how little anyone wanted to look at it once the verdict came in. A confession is the most satisfying evidence there is. It asks nothing of anyone. Annie's confession was the whole case, and the whole case was the confession, which is why reopening it means unpicking a woman's life sentence one thread at a time.

Harriet Walter plays Annie with a stillness that makes the case land harder than any plot twist could, and Cal MacAninch appears as both Sam Keel and Alex. Lynda Bellingham and Anthony Valentine are Mary and Patrick Mantel, Simon Kunz is DAC Ralph Christie, and the regular squad is out in force: Trevor Eve's Boyd, Sue Johnston's Grace Foley, Holly Aird's Frankie Wharton, Claire Goose's Amelia Silver and Wil Johnson's Spencer Jordan. Barbara Machin and Simon Mirren wrote it, Robert Del Maestro directed.

What works here is how uncomfortable the premise is. If Annie didn't kill those two men, then the system spent twenty-five years being certain about something it never actually proved, and everyone involved in that certainty has to sit with it. Boyd, who trusts his own hunches more than is always wise, is well matched against a case built entirely from somebody else's words. A strong opening half, patient where it needs to be.
